STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

Street photography, at its essence, means candid photography of humanity. "A street photograph is a real moment. The art is both about the photographer and their subject." - James Maher

Street Photographers try to display their world while showing what interests them and their feelings.

ORDER VOL 1 ZINE

"However, the term itself is inherently unclear and clunky. It can cause particular thoughts of what it is, such as black and white photographs of people walking down the street. There is much more beyond that." - James Maher

You can do Street photography anywhere, and people do not have to be present in the photo.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

I had an opportunity to participate in a Street Photography workshop given by Reuben Radding. It's an online workshop where we meet once a week on Wednesdays for 3 hours. The name of the seminar is Seeing Ourselves In The Street: Online Photography Workshop.

Our weekly assignment was to submit photographs, make and share new work, and explore what makes our pictures stronger, more personal, and more musical. Reuben lives in New York City, so his photography perspective is slightly different.

I had the pleasure of working with six students in the class, and we all had varying skill levels. Each week I went around Detroit, finding new places and things to photograph. I learned something useful to add to my work each week.

a stream-of-consciousness approach to shooting, editing, and sequencing our work

Reuben Radding

The most helpful thing I picked up from the class was setting aside enough time to go out and shoot after the course ended. Photography requires regular practice, which expands your mind and helps you find new creative ways to deliver a message.

We also spent time learning and viewing other famous professional photographers' work. In this six-week class, Reuben stressed "a stream-of-consciousness approach to shooting, editing, and sequencing our work, looking past our assumptions of "aboutness" or the substantial burdens of documentary practice, yet eschewing the overly predetermined conceptual mandates of so many fine art dogmas."
